Laptop Brightness Not Working in Windows 11 How to Fix It
Your laptop screen is stuck too bright or too dark, the brightness keys do nothing, or the brightness slider has vanished from Windows 11. Usually it's a setting, a missing key combination, or the display driver - not broken hardware. Work through these steps in order; the first ones take seconds.
Step 1: Try Every Way to Change Brightness
- Quick Settings: press Windows + A and drag the brightness slider.
- Settings: open Settings > System > Display and move the Brightness slider.
- Keyboard: press the brightness keys (sun icons), then try them again while holding Fn. Some laptops have an Fn Lock key that swaps function keys and media keys.
If the slider works but the keys don't, the problem is the keys (Step 5). If nothing works or the slider is missing, keep going.
Step 2: Restart the Laptop
A full restart (Start > Power > Restart, not shut down) reloads the display driver. It often brings the slider back after an update.
Step 3: Turn Off Automatic Brightness Changes
If brightness keeps changing by itself or jumps back after you move it, one of these is doing it. Open Settings > System > Display > Brightness (select the arrow next to the slider) and turn off, one at a time:
- Change brightness automatically when lighting changes (only on laptops with a light sensor).
- The content adaptive brightness option (its wording varies by build, for example Help improve battery by optimizing the content shown and brightness).
Then check Settings > System > Power & battery: Energy saver (or Battery saver on older builds) can lower screen brightness while it's on.
Step 4: Check the Display Driver
This is the most common cause of a missing slider.
- Right-click Start > Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- If you see Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, Windows is using a fallback driver that can't control brightness. Install the real graphics driver - through Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates, or from your laptop maker's support site. See how to update drivers in Windows 11 the safe way.
- If brightness broke right after a driver update, right-click the graphics adapter > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver (if it's available).
Don't use "driver updater" tools from ads - they cause more problems than they fix.
Step 5: Enable the Monitor Device
- In Device Manager, expand Monitors.
- If Generic PnP Monitor (or your screen's name) shows a down-arrow icon, it's disabled - right-click it and choose Enable device.
- If it shows a warning icon, right-click > Uninstall device, then restart. Windows adds it back.
Step 6: Fix the Brightness Keys
If the slider works but the keys don't:
- Try Fn + brightness key and toggle Fn Lock (often Fn + Esc, but it varies by maker).
- Install or update the maker's hotkey or support software (for example the maker's own "Vantage", "Control Center" or "Support Assistant" app - names differ by brand) from the maker's website.
- If other keys also fail, the keyboard itself is the problem, not the brightness setting.
Step 7: External Monitor?
If you're looking at a monitor plugged into the laptop or a desktop PC, Windows usually can't change its brightness - use the buttons on the monitor (its on-screen menu). Some newer monitors support a brightness slider in Windows, but it depends on the monitor.
Step 8: Update Windows
Open Settings > Windows Update and install everything, including optional driver updates. Display fixes often arrive this way.
Still Not Working?
- If the screen flickers as well as ignoring brightness changes, see laptop screen flickering in Windows 11.
- If the backlight is completely off (you can see a faint image with a torch), the backlight or screen cable may be faulty - that's a repair job, not a setting.
If you'd rather not dig through Device Manager yourself, the GetQuickTechSupport team can check the driver remotely.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Why is the brightness slider missing in Windows 11?
Most often the display driver isn't installed and Windows is using the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, or the monitor device is disabled in Device Manager. On a desktop PC with an external monitor, Windows usually has no slider - use the monitor's own buttons.
Why do my brightness keys not work?
On many laptops the brightness keys need the Fn key, or the maker's hotkey software. Check that Fn Lock isn't reversing the keys and that the maker's support app or hotkey driver is installed.
Why does my screen brightness change by itself?
Automatic brightness based on light, content adaptive brightness, or the energy saver can change it. You can turn these off in Settings > System > Display > Brightness and in Power & battery.
Can I change the brightness of an external monitor from Windows?
Usually you use the buttons on the monitor. Some newer monitors and Windows builds allow a slider, but it depends on the monitor.
