Few things are more frustrating than watching your iPhone battery percentage drop rapidly. Before buying a new phone or battery, try these proven fixes.
Lithium-ion batteries degrade over time.
Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging.
If Maximum Capacity is below 80%, consider a battery replacement.
Some apps consume far more power than others.
Go to Settings > Battery.
Scroll down to see battery usage by app.
Uninstall or limit background activity for high-drain apps.
Many apps refresh content even when you're not using them.
Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh.
Turn it off completely or disable it for specific apps.
The display is one of the biggest battery drains.
Swipe down from top-right to adjust brightness.
Go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock and set to 1-2 minutes.
Fetching emails constantly consumes power.
Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts > Fetch New Data (on iOS 18 and later: Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts > Fetch New Data).
Set to "Hourly" or "Manually" instead of "Push."
GPS tracking is a major battery drain.
Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
Change apps from "Always" to "While Using" or "Never."
Apple notes that keyboard haptics can affect battery life.
Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Keyboard Feedback.
Turn off "Haptic."
This feature reduces background activity and performance to extend battery.
Go to Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode.
Or add it to Control Center for quick access.
5G consumes more power than LTE or Wi-Fi.
Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data.
Select "5G Auto" or "LTE" instead of "5G On."
Apple regularly releases updates that fix battery-draining bugs.
Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
Install any available updates.
After a major iOS update, or when you set up a new iPhone from a backup, the phone re-indexes photos, messages and files and re-downloads apps in the background. Battery life is often worse for the first day or two. Keep it on Wi-Fi and charging overnight, and judge battery life after that.
In Settings > Battery, the app list can show both screen time and background activity for each app (tap the list to switch views, depending on your iOS version). An app with a lot of background activity you didn't expect is a good candidate for turning off its Background App Refresh or location access.
Always On display (iPhone Pro models from iPhone 14 Pro onward): Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display. Turning it off saves some power.
Weak signal: in areas with poor mobile signal the phone works harder to stay connected. Use Wi-Fi where you can, or Airplane mode with Wi-Fi on in places with no signal.
Restart the iPhone if one app or process seems stuck and the phone feels warm while idle.
Apple says its batteries are designed to keep up to 80% of their original capacity after a set number of full charge cycles (500 for older models, 1,000 for iPhone 15 and later), under ideal conditions. If Battery Health shows a Service message, or the phone shuts down unexpectedly at a decent percentage, get the battery replaced by Apple or an authorised service provider. Avoid cheap unbranded batteries.
Fast battery drain is often caused by background app activity, location services, or an aging battery. Start with Battery Health and app usage data, then apply the fixes that address your specific problem areas. Using an Android phone instead? See battery draining fast on Android.
Common causes are a recent iOS update still finishing background work, one app misbehaving, poor mobile signal, or an aging battery. Check Settings > Battery for the app list and Battery Health.
When Battery Health shows a Service message, Maximum Capacity is around or below 80%, or the phone shuts down unexpectedly. Use Apple or an authorised service provider.
No. It only reduces background activity and some visual effects while it is on. It turns off automatically when the battery is charged enough.
Generally no. Apple doesn't recommend force-closing apps to save battery; only close an app that is frozen or misbehaving.
