You have 50,000 unread emails. Important messages get buried. Finding anything takes forever. Here's how to fix it in one weekend.
Most emails you never asked for.
Go to unsubscribe.me (free tool) or use Unroll.Me.
Alternatively, search "unsubscribe" in Gmail.
Click unsubscribe links in every email.
Gmail automatically categorizes these. Delete them all.
Click "Promotions" tab.
Select the checkbox at the top to select all.
Click "Select all conversations that match this search" (important step).
Delete.
Specific senders are clogging your inbox.
In search bar, type from:newsletter@example.com.
Select all and delete.
Repeat for top 10 senders.
Large files take up most of your 15GB limit.
Search has:attachment larger:5mb.
Delete anything you don't need.
Download important attachments first.
You will never read them again.
Search older_than:2y.
Scan quickly for anything important.
Delete everything else.
Filters automate your inbox forever.
Go to Settings > Filters and Blocked Addresses > Create New Filter.
Filter 1: from:newsletter > Skip Inbox > Apply label "Read Later."
Filter 2: from:bank OR from:billing > Apply label "Finance."
Filter 3: -from:(@gmail.com OR @company.com) > Skip Inbox (newsletters).
See your most important emails first.
Go to Settings > Inbox.
Change to "Multiple Inboxes."
Create sections for: Unread, Starred, Everything Else.
Archiving removes from inbox but keeps for search.
Select emails you want to keep but not see.
Press "E" key (archive shortcut).
You can always search for them later.
Don't check email constantly.
Use Boomerang or built-in "Schedule Send."
Check email twice daily (10 AM and 3 PM).
Schedule responses for those times only.
Push notifications destroy focus.
Remove Gmail app from your home screen.
Check email only on desktop.
Your stress levels will drop significantly.
A clean inbox takes one weekend to achieve but lasts forever. Unsubscribe from everything, delete by sender and attachment size, then set up filters to maintain it.
