Your PS5 was lightning fast when you bought it. Now games stutter, menus lag, and downloads take forever. Here's how to restore peak performance.
This is the PS5 equivalent of defragging. It fixes most slowdowns.
Turn off PS5 completely.
Press and hold power button until second beep (Safe Mode).
Connect controller via USB.
Select "Rebuild Database" (takes 5-10 minutes).
Cache buildup causes menu lag and slow loading.
Enter Safe Mode (same as above).
Select "Clear Cache and Rebuild Database."
Choose "Clear System Software Cache."
Screenshots and video clips consume storage and slow the system.
Go to Media Gallery.
Delete captures from games you no longer play.
Upload important clips to YouTube or external drive first.
External hard drives are much slower than the PS5's internal SSD.
Move games from external drive to console storage.
Settings > Storage > Games and Apps > Move to Console Storage.
Only keep PS4 games on external drives.
Quick Resume keeps games suspended in the background.
Press PS button.
Select the game icon and press Options.
Choose "Close Game" (not just switch to another game).
Slow downloads and laggy online play are usually network issues.
Go to Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Connection.
Wired Ethernet is always faster than Wi-Fi.
Restart your router if speeds are below 50 Mbps.
Outdated controller firmware can cause input lag.
Go to Settings > Accessories > Controller (General).
Select "DualSense Wireless Controller" > "Update Firmware."
Some games default to graphics mode (30fps) instead of performance (60fps+).
Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets.
Set "Performance Mode or Resolution Mode" to "Performance Mode."
PS5 needs free space for virtual memory and updates.
Delete games you haven't played in 6 months.
Remove game trial versions and betas.
Aim for 50-100GB free at all times.
Overheating causes the PS5 to throttle performance.
Unplug the console.
Remove side plates (instructions on PlayStation support).
Use compressed air to clean the fan and vents.
This feature can cause input lag on some TVs.
Go to Settings > System > HDMI.
Turn off "Enable HDMI Device Link."
Also disable "HDMI CEC" on your TV settings.
PS5 slowdown is usually caused by database corruption, insufficient storage, or overheating. Start with Rebuild Database and clearing cache. If problems persist, free up 50GB of space and clean the fan.
