Sticky Keys is an accessibility feature: it lets you press keyboard shortcuts one key at a time instead of holding keys together. If you don't need it, it can be confusing - Shift or Ctrl seems stuck, shortcuts fire by accident, or a "Do you want to turn on Sticky Keys?" box pops up in the middle of a game. Here's how to turn it off, plus two related features that cause similar problems.
Sticky Keys has a keyboard shortcut: press Shift five times in a row. That's why it keeps coming back if you tap Shift a lot.
Now pressing Shift five times does nothing, and the pop-up stops.
Filter Keys ignores brief or repeated key presses. If your keyboard seems slow, skips letters, or needs you to hold keys down, Filter Keys is probably on. Its shortcut is holding the right Shift key for 8 seconds.
Toggle Keys plays a sound when you press Caps Lock, Num Lock or Scroll Lock. It's harmless, but if you hear beeps when pressing those keys, this is why. Its shortcut is holding Num Lock for 5 seconds.
In Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard, turn Toggle keys Off and, in its options, turn off its keyboard shortcut.
The older Ease of Access Center still has the same settings:
@ and " swapped): that's the keyboard layout, not Sticky Keys - see keyboard typing wrong characters in Windows 11.If someone using the PC relies on Sticky Keys or Filter Keys, leave the feature on and just turn off its keyboard shortcut. That way it keeps working for them, but nobody can switch it on or off by accident.
Pressing Shift five times in a row turns it on through its keyboard shortcut - easy to do in games. Turn off the Keyboard shortcut for Sticky keys in Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard > Sticky keys to stop it.
Shift, Ctrl, Alt or the Windows key stay pressed after you let go, so the next key you press acts like a shortcut. The setting shows as On in Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.
Very likely. Filter Keys ignores brief or repeated presses and can be turned on by holding the right Shift key for 8 seconds. Turn it off in Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.
Yes, if its shortcut is enabled: press Shift five times to switch it on or off. Pressing two keys at once, such as Shift and another key, can also turn it off if that option is set.
