When Windows 11 search stops working, the box may refuse to accept typing, stay blank, or find apps but none of your files. The cause is usually a stuck Search process or a damaged search index, and both are fixable without reinstalling anything. Work through these steps in order.
Use Start > Power > Restart (not Shut down, which on many PCs uses Fast Startup and doesn't fully reload Windows). Test search again afterwards.
If the whole taskbar and Start menu are unresponsive too, restart Windows Explorer from the same list, and see Windows 11 Start menu not opening.
Microsoft fixes search bugs through updates. Open Settings > Windows Update, click Check for updates, install everything and restart.
If search finds apps but not your documents, the folder may not be included.
Microsoft suggests allowing up to 24 hours for the rebuild. Search results will be incomplete until it finishes; your files are not affected.
services.msc and press Enter.Damaged Windows files can break search. Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt as administrator and run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
DISM can take 10-20 minutes and may pause at a percentage; let it finish. Then run sfc /scannow and restart. If SFC reports it fixed files, test search again.
Create a test account in Settings > Accounts > Other users > Add account, sign in to it and try search. If search works there, the problem is in your user profile. You can move your files to the new account, or keep trying the steps above on your own account.
Skip "search fixer" or registry-cleaner programs and random registry edits from forums. They rarely fix search and can break other parts of Windows.
If search still fails and the PC is generally slow or unstable, the problem may be wider than search; see Windows running slow: 15 fixes. As a last resort, Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now reinstalls Windows while keeping your files and apps, but back up first in case anything goes wrong.
The Search process has usually stopped responding. Restarting it from Task Manager or signing out and back in fixes it in most cases.
Microsoft says to allow up to 24 hours for the indexer to finish rebuilding. Results are incomplete until it is done, but you can keep using the PC.
The folder with your files may not be indexed. Add it under Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows, or switch to Enhanced mode to index the whole PC.
Yes. It only deletes and recreates the index database. Your files are not touched.
