Microsoft Teams Not Working How to Fix It
Teams won't open, sits on a loading screen, keeps asking you to sign in, or a meeting has no camera or sound. Before you reinstall anything, find out whether the problem is Teams itself, your account, or just the app on your PC. These steps are for the current Teams app on Windows 11 (Microsoft has retired "classic Teams").
Step 1: Is Teams Down for Everyone?
- For a work or school account, your IT admin sees service health in the Microsoft 365 admin center; ask them, or check Microsoft 365's official status channels.
- Ask a colleague whether Teams works for them.
If there's an outage, no fix on your PC will help - wait for Microsoft.
Step 2: Try Teams on the Web
Open teams.microsoft.com in Edge or Chrome and sign in.
- Works on the web - your account is fine; the problem is the app on this PC. Continue with Steps 3-6.
- Doesn't work on the web either - it's the account, the network, or a service issue. Check your internet connection and ask your IT admin (work/school) whether your account or licence changed.
Step 3: Quit Teams Fully and Restart
Closing the window doesn't close Teams.
- Right-click the Teams icon in the taskbar notification area (near the clock) and choose Quit.
- If it won't quit, open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc), select Microsoft Teams, and choose End task.
- Open Teams again. If it's still stuck, restart the PC.
Step 4: Sign Out and Back In
In Teams, select your profile picture > Sign out, close Teams, open it again and sign in. If you have more than one account (work and personal), make sure you're signing in to the right one.
Sign-in loops are often caused by a wrong date and time - check Settings > Time & language > Date & time and turn on Set time automatically.
Step 5: Update Teams and Windows
- In Teams, select Settings and more (...) > Settings > About Teams (in some versions, Check for updates in the same menu).
- Install updates in Settings > Windows Update, then restart.
Step 6: Reset the Teams App (Clears the Cache)
Microsoft recommends this only for problems with the local app - it won't bring back missing chats or channels. Resetting deletes the app's local data, including your Teams personal settings. Your chats and files are in the cloud and stay.
- Quit Teams (Step 3).
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and search for Microsoft Teams.
- Select the three dots (...) next to it and choose Advanced options.
- Under Reset, select Reset.
- Open Teams again. The first start may take longer while it rebuilds its cache.
If Reset isn't available or doesn't help, uninstall Microsoft Teams from the same page, restart, and install it again from Microsoft's Teams download page or the Microsoft Store. On a work PC, ask IT first - they may install it for you.
Camera or Microphone Not Working in Teams
- In Teams, select Settings and more (...) > Settings > Devices and choose the right camera, microphone and speaker. Make a test call from that page if it's offered.
- Check Windows privacy settings: Settings > Privacy & security > Camera and Microphone - make sure access is on and Teams is allowed.
- Close other apps that might be using the camera (Zoom, the Camera app, a browser tab).

Teams Slow or Freezing in Meetings
- Close browser tabs and apps you don't need; Teams video uses a lot of memory.
- Turn off your incoming video or background effects on a slow connection.
- Use a wired connection or move closer to the router.
Still Not Working?
On a work or school account, your IT team can check your licence, policies and sign-in logs - things you can't see yourself. For a personal Teams account or your home PC, the GetQuickTechSupport team can help you check the app and settings.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How do I clear the Teams cache in Windows 11?
For the current Teams app, Microsoft's method is Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Teams > three dots > Advanced options > Reset. This deletes the app's local data, including your personal Teams settings.
Does clearing the Teams cache delete my chats?
No. Chats and files are stored in the cloud. Microsoft notes, though, that clearing the cache doesn't fix missing messages or channels - it only helps with some local app problems.
Why does Teams work in the browser but not the app?
Then your account and the service are fine and the problem is the app on your PC. Update it, then reset it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
Is classic Teams still supported?
No. Microsoft has replaced classic Teams with the new Teams app. If you still have the classic version, install the new Teams app from Microsoft.
