Microphone Not Working on Windows 11: How to Fix It
When people on a call can't hear you, or an app says no microphone was found, Windows 11 usually has one of three problems: microphone access is blocked, the wrong input device is selected, or the driver needs a reset. Go through these steps in order and test after each one.
Fix 1: Check the Hardware
- Look for a mute switch or button on the headset, the cable or the mic itself.
- Many laptops have a mic mute key (often F4 or F8 with a crossed-out mic icon). Press it and watch for a light.
- Plug a wired mic firmly into the correct socket (usually pink, or the combined headset jack), or try a different USB port directly on the PC.
- Try the mic on another device to rule out a faulty mic.
Fix 2: Allow Microphone Access
Windows can block the microphone for every app, or for some.
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access.
- Turn on Let apps access your microphone, and switch on the apps you need in the list.
- For programs installed from the web (Zoom, Discord, desktop Teams, browsers), turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone.
Fix 3: Choose the Right Input Device
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Input, pick your mic from Choose a device for speaking or recording.
- Select the mic to open its properties, check Input volume is well above zero, and click Start test. Speak normally; the test shows the level Windows hears.
If you use a webcam, headset and laptop mic, it is easy for Windows to pick the wrong one. Choose the one you actually speak into.
Fix 4: Check the App's Own Settings
Teams, Zoom, Discord and browsers each have their own microphone choice. Open the app's audio or device settings and select the same mic. In a browser, click the icon at the left of the address bar and make sure Microphone is allowed for that site.
Fix 5: Run the Troubleshooter
Open Settings > System > Sound, scroll to Advanced, and under Troubleshoot common sound problems choose Input devices. On current Windows 11 versions this opens the Get Help app, which checks the device and settings and offers fixes.
Fix 6: Bluetooth Headsets
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices, remove the headset, and pair it again.
- In Settings > System > Sound > Input, choose the headset.
- Some headsets show two entries (for example "Headset" and "Stereo"); only the headset entry has a working mic, and music quality drops while the mic is in use. That is normal for Bluetooth.
If Bluetooth has vanished from Settings, see Bluetooth disappeared from Windows.
Fix 7: Reinstall the Audio Driver
- Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
- Expand Audio inputs and outputs and Sound, video and game controllers.
- If the problem started after an update, right-click the device, choose Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver.
- Otherwise right-click it and choose Uninstall device, then restart. Windows reinstalls the driver.
- If the mic is missing, click Action > Scan for hardware changes. A device with a down-arrow icon is disabled; right-click it and choose Enable device.
For USB mics, also try a different port; if no USB device responds, see USB ports not working.
Fix 8: Turn Off Exclusive Mode and Enhancements
Some apps grab the mic so nothing else can use it.
- Open Settings > System > Sound > More sound settings.
- On the Recording tab, double-click your mic.
- On the Advanced tab, untick Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device.
- If there is an Enhancements or Advanced effects option, turn the effects off to test.
Fix 9: Install Updates
Open Settings > Windows Update, install all updates (including Advanced options > Optional updates if an audio driver is listed) and restart. The PC maker's support page may also have a newer audio driver for your model; avoid driver-updater programs.
Still Not Working?
If no mic works, including a known-good USB headset, after all of the above, check that sound output works as well; if speakers are silent too, see no sound on Windows 11. A built-in laptop mic that never shows up in Device Manager may be a hardware fault that needs a repair.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Why does my mic work in one app but not another?
The app either has no permission or is set to a different input device. Check Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone, then the app's own audio settings.
How do I test my microphone in Windows 11?
Open Settings > System > Sound, select your microphone under Input and click Start test. Speak normally and watch the result.
Why is my headset mic not detected?
Laptops with one combined audio jack need a headset with a 4-pole plug. Check the headset's mute switch, try a USB port directly on the PC, or re-pair a Bluetooth headset.
Why is my microphone too quiet?
Raise Input volume in Settings > System > Sound under your microphone's properties, and move the mic closer. Some headsets also have their own volume control.
