Bluetooth Headphones Connected But No Sound Windows 11
Your Bluetooth headphones or earbuds show as Connected in Windows 11, but nothing plays - or the sound comes out of the laptop speakers instead. The Bluetooth link is working; the problem is almost always where Windows sends the sound. Work through these steps in order. They start with the quick checks and end with re-pairing and drivers.
If there's no sound from any device, not just the headphones, follow no sound on Windows 11 first.
Step 1: Choose the Headphones as the Output
Windows doesn't always switch to Bluetooth headphones when they connect.
- Select the speaker icon on the right of the taskbar (or press Win + A).
- Select the arrow (>) next to the volume slider.
- Pick your headphones in the list.
You can also go to Settings > System > Sound and choose them under Output. Play something and check the volume slider isn't at zero or muted.
Step 2: Check the Volume in Three Places
- The Windows volume (taskbar slider).
- The app's own volume - open Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer and make sure the app playing sound isn't muted or sent to another device.
- The headphones' own volume buttons. Some headphones start at a low volume after pairing.
Step 3: Stereo vs Hands-Free
Many headsets connect to Windows in two ways:
- Stereo - good quality for music and video, but no microphone.
- Hands-Free - uses the headset microphone for calls, with much lower, often mono, sound.
When a calling app (Teams, Zoom, Discord and others) opens the headset microphone, Windows switches to Hands-Free. Sound can then go quiet, crackle or stop in other apps. If you only want to listen, set the calling app's microphone to your laptop's built-in mic. In Settings > System > Sound, check which headset entry is selected under Output - on some PCs the two modes are listed separately.
Step 4: Disconnect From Your Phone
A lot of earbuds and headphones can only play sound from one device at a time. If they're still connected to your phone or tablet, the phone may keep the audio. Turn off Bluetooth on the phone, then play sound on the PC again.
Step 5: Turn Bluetooth Off and On
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Turn Bluetooth off, wait 10 seconds and turn it back on.
- Put the headphones back in their case or switch them off and on, then connect them again.
Also restart the PC. A restart clears a stuck audio service more reliably than anything else on this list.
Step 6: Remove and Pair the Headphones Again
A damaged pairing is a common cause of "connected but silent".
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices.
- Find your headphones, select the three dots (...) and choose Remove device.
- Put the headphones into pairing mode (check the maker's guide - often you hold the power button or the case button until a light flashes).
- Select Add device > Bluetooth and pick them.
Play a test sound as soon as they connect.
Step 7: Run the Troubleshooters
Open the Get Help app (search for it in Start) and run the Bluetooth troubleshooter, then the audio troubleshooter. They restart the related services and fix common setting problems automatically.
Step 8: Check the Bluetooth and Audio Services
- Press Win + R, type
services.msc and press Enter. - Find Bluetooth Support Service. Its status should be Running. If not, right-click it and choose Start.
- Do the same for Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
If a service was stopped, set its Startup type to Automatic (right-click > Properties).
Step 9: Update or Reinstall the Bluetooth Driver
- Check Settings > Windows Update, including Advanced options > Optional updates, for Bluetooth or audio driver updates.
- Open Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, right-click your Bluetooth adapter and choose Update driver.
- If sound broke after an update, open the adapter's Properties > Driver and choose Roll Back Driver if it's available.
Get drivers only from Windows Update or your PC maker's support site. See how to update drivers in Windows 11 the safe way. If Bluetooth has vanished completely from Settings, follow Bluetooth disappeared from Windows.
Still No Sound?
- Test the headphones on another device. If they're silent on the phone too, the problem is the headphones (battery, firmware or a fault). Check the maker's app for a firmware update or a reset procedure.
- Test other Bluetooth headphones on the PC. If they don't work either, the PC's Bluetooth adapter or driver is the problem. A small USB Bluetooth adapter is a cheap way to test.
- Sound cuts out or stutters? Move closer to the PC, and keep the laptop away from USB 3 hubs and metal surfaces - they interfere with Bluetooth signals.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Why are my Bluetooth headphones connected but not playing sound on my PC?
Most often Windows is still sending sound to another output, such as the laptop speakers or a monitor. Select the speaker icon on the taskbar, open the output list and choose your headphones.
Why does my Bluetooth headset sound bad or mono during calls?
When an app uses the headset's microphone, Windows switches to the Hands-Free profile, which has lower sound quality. Use a separate microphone or pick the stereo output when you only need to listen.
Do I need to re-pair my headphones to fix no sound?
Try the quick steps first. If the sound still doesn't play, remove the headphones in Settings > Bluetooth & devices and pair them again - this clears a broken pairing.
My headphones work on my phone but not on my PC. Why?
Many headphones stay connected to the phone and only play from one device at a time. Turn off Bluetooth on the phone or disconnect the headphones there, then play sound on the PC.
