Touch Screen Not Working on Windows 11 Laptop Fix
Your laptop's touch screen stopped responding, reacts in the wrong place, or only works now and then. The mouse and touchpad still work, so it's not a frozen PC - it's the touch input. In most cases Windows has turned the device off, lost its driver, or the calibration is wrong, and you can fix it in a few minutes.
These steps are for Windows 11 laptops and 2-in-1s. If the touchpad (not the screen) is the problem, see laptop touchpad not working instead.
Step 0: Does Your Laptop Have a Touch Screen?
Open Settings > System > About and look at Pen and touch under Device specifications. If it says No pen or touch input is available for this display, either the laptop has no touch screen, or Windows can't see it at all - skip to Step 4.
Step 1: Restart (Not Shut Down)
Choose Start > Power > Restart. A restart fully reloads drivers; a shutdown on a laptop with Fast Startup may not.
Step 2: Clean the Screen and Remove Accessories
- Wipe the screen with a dry microfiber cloth. Grease, water drops or a thick screen protector can stop touch or cause "ghost touches".
- Unplug external monitors and docks, then test again - with a second display, touch can end up mapped to the wrong screen.
- Remove any case or cover pressing on the screen edges.
Step 3: Re-Enable the Touch Screen in Device Manager
- Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices.
- Find HID-compliant touch screen (there may be more than one).
- Right-click it:
- If you see Enable device, select it - the touch screen was turned off.
- If you see Disable device, select it, confirm, then right-click again and choose Enable device. This restarts the device.
- Test the screen.
If you don't see it, select View > Show hidden devices. A greyed-out entry means Windows knows about it but it isn't connected right now.
Step 4: Update or Reinstall the Driver
- In Device Manager, right-click HID-compliant touch screen and choose Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates and install any touch, chipset or firmware driver listed for your laptop.
- Visit your laptop maker's support site and install their touch-screen, chipset and firmware (BIOS) updates for your exact model. Use the maker's own site or support app - never driver-updater tools.
- Still not working? Right-click the device, choose Uninstall device (don't tick any option to delete driver software unless the maker says so), then restart. Windows reinstalls it.
If the problem started after an update, try Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver if the button is available. Our guide on how to update drivers in Windows 11 the safe way covers both.
Step 5: Recalibrate the Touch Screen
If touches land in the wrong spot:
- Open Control Panel (search for it in Start).
- Search Control Panel for calibrate and choose Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input (the Tablet PC Settings window).
- Select Calibrate, choose Touch input, and follow the crosshairs.
- If an old calibration is making it worse, select Reset instead.
With several displays, use Setup in the same window to tell Windows which screen is the touch screen.
Step 6: Check Windows Update and System Files
- Install all updates in Settings > Windows Update, then restart.
- If other things are also misbehaving, run DISM and SFC to repair system files - see how to run SFC and DISM.
Step 7: Test Outside Windows
Some laptops can test touch from the maker's built-in diagnostics (often opened with a key at start-up - check your maker's support site). If touch doesn't work there either, it's likely a hardware problem, not Windows.
You can also try a System Restore to a date when touch worked - see how to use System Restore in Windows 11. Your personal files are kept.
When It's Probably Hardware
- The screen was dropped, cracked, or had liquid on it.
- Touch works in some areas but a band or corner is dead.
- The touch screen disappears from Device Manager completely even after driver and firmware updates.
These need a repair - contact the laptop maker (check the warranty first). For everything else, the GetQuickTechSupport team can help you check drivers and settings remotely.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How do I turn the touch screen back on in Windows 11?
Open Device Manager, expand Human Interface Devices, right-click HID-compliant touch screen and choose Enable device. If it says Disable device, it's already on - disable and enable it once to restart it.
Why is HID-compliant touch screen missing from Device Manager?
Select View > Show hidden devices. If it's still missing, Windows isn't detecting the touch hardware: install the laptop maker's touch or chipset drivers, update Windows, or check the firmware settings. It can also mean a hardware fault.
Touch works in the wrong place. How do I fix it?
Recalibrate: open Control Panel, search for Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input, and choose Calibrate (or Reset to remove an old calibration).
Does every Windows 11 laptop have a touch screen?
No. Many models don't. Check Settings > System > About: Pen and touch shows whether touch input is available on your device.
