WhatsApp Web Not Working: How to Fix It
WhatsApp Web lets you chat from a computer browser at web.whatsapp.com. When it hangs on the loading screen, won't show or scan the QR code, or keeps logging you out, the cause is almost always one of three things: the phone app, the link between phone and computer, or the browser. Work through them in that order.
How WhatsApp Web Works (In Short)
WhatsApp Web is a linked device: your WhatsApp account lives on your phone, and you link the computer to it. According to WhatsApp:
- you can link up to four devices to one phone,
- linked devices keep working without your phone online,
- but they are logged out if your phone isn't used for more than 14 days,
- you need WhatsApp installed on a phone with an active number.
1. Check the Basics
- Is WhatsApp itself down? If WhatsApp also doesn't work on your phone, it may be a wider outage - wait and try later.
- Is the computer online? Open another website. If nothing loads, fix the connection first - see WiFi connected but no internet.
- Update WhatsApp on the phone in the Play Store or App Store. An out-of-date phone app can stop linking.
- Open WhatsApp on the phone for a moment so it can sync, especially if you haven't used it in a while.
2. Reload and Relink
- On the computer, reload web.whatsapp.com (press F5 or Ctrl + R).
- If it's still stuck, log out of the computer from the phone:
- Android: open WhatsApp, tap More options (three dots) > Linked devices, tap the computer and choose Log out.
- iPhone: open WhatsApp, go to Settings > Linked devices, tap the computer and choose Log out.
- Reload web.whatsapp.com to get a new QR code.
- On the phone, go to Linked devices > Link a device and scan the code on the computer screen.
Recent versions also let you link with your phone number instead of scanning - look for a link below the QR code. Its name and availability depend on the version.
If you already have four linked devices, log out one you don't use before linking a new one.
3. QR Code Won't Load or Won't Scan
- Code won't appear / keeps spinning: reload the page, then try steps 4 and 5 (browser and network).
- Code expired: codes change after a short time. Select Click to reload QR code (or reload the page) and scan straight away.
- Phone won't read it:
- wipe the phone's camera lens,
- turn up the computer's screen brightness and zoom the browser in (Ctrl + plus),
- hold the phone so the whole code fills the frame,
- scan from Linked devices > Link a device in WhatsApp - the phone's normal camera app won't link it.
4. Fix the Browser
- Update the browser. WhatsApp Web supports current versions of the major browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and others). Old versions may not work.
- Try an incognito/private window to test. If it works there, an extension is the problem - ad blockers, privacy tools and script blockers are common culprits. Turn them off for web.whatsapp.com (Chrome: chrome://extensions; Edge: edge://extensions).
Note: you'll be logged out when the private window closes, so go back to a normal window once you've found the cause.
- Clear the site data. Clearing cookies and cache for WhatsApp logs you out, but it fixes a corrupted session. See how to clear cache and cookies in Chrome, Edge and Firefox. Then relink.
- Try another browser. If WhatsApp Web works in Edge but not Chrome (or the other way round), the problem is that browser's settings or extensions.
- Make sure the browser isn't set to clear cookies when it closes - that logs you out every time.
5. Check the Network
- VPN or proxy: turn off a VPN, or try without the proxy, and reload.
- Work or school network: some networks block WhatsApp. Try at home or on your phone's hotspot to test. If it works elsewhere, the network is blocking it - ask the IT team rather than trying to get around it.
- Other sites slow too? A general connection problem is more likely - see DNS server not responding.
6. Keeps Logging Out?
- You're using a private/incognito window - use a normal one.
- The browser clears cookies on exit, or a "cleaner" program deletes them.
- Your phone hasn't been used for more than 14 days - linked devices log out after that.
- Someone logged the device out from the phone, or you've reached the device limit.
7. Try the WhatsApp Desktop App
On Windows, the WhatsApp app from the Microsoft Store (on Mac, from the Mac App Store) is an alternative to the browser. It uses the same linking steps. If the browser version keeps failing, the app avoids extension and cookie problems.
Security Note
Only link computers you own or trust. Check Linked devices on your phone now and then - if you see a device you don't recognise, log it out. Never scan a WhatsApp QR code that someone else sends you: it could link their computer to your account.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Does my phone need to be online for WhatsApp Web to work?
Not all the time. WhatsApp says linked devices work without your phone online, but they are logged out if your phone isn't used for more than 14 days. The phone also needs to be online when you first link a device.
How many devices can I use WhatsApp Web on?
WhatsApp lets you link up to four devices at a time to your main phone. If you've reached the limit, log out an old one in Linked devices on the phone.
Why won't the WhatsApp Web QR code scan?
Common causes are a dirty or blocked phone camera, the screen too dim or too far away, or an expired code. Reload the page to get a fresh code, zoom the browser in, and scan from Linked devices in the WhatsApp app - not the phone's normal camera app.
Why does WhatsApp Web keep logging me out?
Clearing browser cookies, using a private or incognito window, or the phone being unused for more than 14 days will all log a linked device out. Use a normal browser window and don't clear cookies for web.whatsapp.com.
