Microsoft Store Not Working in Windows 11 How to Fix It
The Microsoft Store won't open, shows a blank page, says "Try that again" or leaves every download stuck on Pending. The fixes below start with the ones that take seconds and move on to repairing the app itself. None of them removes the apps you've already installed.
Step 1: The Quick Checks
- Restart the PC. Not just shut down and on again: choose Start > Power > Restart, which fully restarts Windows.
- Check the internet connection. Open a website in your browser. If nothing loads, fix the connection first.
- Check the date and time. Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time and turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically, then select Sync now. A wrong clock breaks the Store's secure connections.
- Check that you're signed in. In the Store, select your profile picture at the top. If it shows an error, sign out and sign in again with your Microsoft account.
Step 2: Clear the Store Cache (wsreset)
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
wsreset.exe and press Enter. - A blank Command Prompt window stays open for a few seconds to a minute. Don't close it.
- The Store then opens by itself.
This clears the Store's cache only. It doesn't change your apps or your account.
Step 3: Fix Stuck Downloads
If apps stay on Pending or stop at 0%:
- In the Store, open Downloads (bottom left) and pause or cancel other downloads and updates, then retry the one you want.
- Let Windows Update finish: open Settings > Windows Update. The Store waits while big updates install. Restart if asked.
- Check free space on your C: drive in Settings > System > Storage. Big apps and games need room to download and unpack.
- Turn off any VPN or proxy for a moment and try again. For proxy problems see Windows could not automatically detect network proxy settings.
Step 4: Repair or Reset the Store App
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Store, select the three dots next to it and choose Advanced options.
- Select Terminate to stop it.
- Select Repair and try the Store again. Repair keeps the app's data.
- If it still fails, come back and select Reset. This clears the Store's data and signs you out of it (your installed apps stay).
Step 5: Run the Troubleshooter
Windows includes a troubleshooter for Store apps. On recent Windows 11 versions it runs in the Get Help app: open Start, type Get Help, and search for Windows Store Apps troubleshooter. On some versions it is still under Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Store Apps > Run. Follow any fix it suggests.
Step 6: Update Windows and Repair System Files
The Store depends on Windows components that are updated through Windows Update.
- Install everything in Settings > Windows Update, then restart.
- If Windows Update itself fails, see Windows Update stuck or failing.
- Repair system files with DISM and SFC; our guide on how to run SFC and DISM to repair Windows 11 has the exact commands.
Step 7: Try Another User Account
If the Store works in another Windows account, the problem is in your user profile. Create a test account under Settings > Accounts > Other users > Add account, sign in to it and open the Store. If it works there, you can move your files to the new account or keep using the Store from it.
At Work or School?
On a PC managed by an organisation, the Store may be blocked or replaced by a company app portal on purpose. If you see a message that the Store is blocked or "managed by your organization", ask your IT department rather than changing settings.
Still Not Working?
- Many apps can also be downloaded from the maker's own website. Only use the official site, never "free" copies from download sites.
- If both the Store and other built-in apps (Settings, Photos, Start menu) fail, the problem is broader than the Store; a repair install through Settings > System > Recovery (Fix problems using Windows Update, on versions that have it) keeps your files and apps. Back up first anyway.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How do I reset the Microsoft Store cache?
Press Windows + R, type wsreset.exe and press Enter. A blank window opens for a short time, then the Store opens with its cache cleared. Your installed apps are not affected.
Why are Microsoft Store downloads stuck on Pending?
Usually another download or update is queued first, Windows Update is busy, or the Store cache is stuck. Open the Store's Downloads page, pause other items, let Windows Update finish, then run wsreset.exe.
Will resetting the Microsoft Store remove my apps?
No. Resetting the Store app in Settings clears the Store's own data and sign-in; the apps you installed from it stay installed.
Can a wrong date or time break the Microsoft Store?
Yes. The Store uses secure connections that fail when the clock is wrong. Turn on Set time automatically in Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
