Gmail Not Receiving Emails How to Fix It
Someone says they sent you an email, but it's not in your Gmail inbox. Before assuming it's lost, know that in most cases the message did arrive - it's just somewhere else, or a setting is sending it away. Work through these checks in order; the first three find most missing emails.
Step 1: Search Everywhere, Not Just the Inbox
The inbox hides a lot. In the Gmail search box, type:
in:anywhere from:sender@example.com
Replace the address with the sender's (or use a word from the subject). in:anywhere searches every folder including Spam and Trash.
Also look at:
- The Promotions, Social and Updates tabs at the top of the inbox (on the phone app, in the menu).
- All Mail - messages that were archived skip the inbox but stay here.
Step 2: Check Spam
Open Spam in the left menu (select More if you don't see it). If you find the email there:
- Open it and select Report not spam. It moves to the inbox and Gmail learns from it.
- Add the sender to your Google Contacts so future messages are trusted.
Remember Gmail deletes messages in Spam automatically after 30 days.
Step 3: Check Filters and Blocked Addresses
A filter you (or an app) created months ago can archive, label or even delete incoming mail.
- On a computer, open Gmail and select the gear icon > See all settings.
- Open Filters and Blocked Addresses.
- Look for filters that match the sender, their domain or common words, with actions such as Skip the Inbox, Delete it or Forward. Edit or delete them.
- Further down, check the blocked addresses list - unblock the sender if they're there.
Step 4: Check Forwarding and POP/IMAP
- In See all settings, open Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
- If forwarding is on, check the setting for what happens to Gmail's copy - archive or delete means messages won't stay in your inbox.
- Under POP download, if another email program downloads your mail with POP, it may be set to delete Gmail's copy. Change it to keep Gmail's copy in the inbox.
Step 5: Check Your Google Storage
Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos share one storage quota (15 GB on a free account). Google says that when your storage is full, you can't send or receive emails - senders may get a bounce message.
- Open
https://one.google.com/storage (or check the storage bar at the bottom of Gmail on a computer). - If it's full or close, free space: empty Trash and Spam, delete large emails (search
larger:10M), and clear large files from Drive and Photos.

Step 6: Is It the Right Account and App?
- Right address? Ask the sender to confirm the exact address they used - a missing letter or old address is common.
- Right account? On a phone with several Google accounts, check which account you're looking at (tap your profile picture).
- Try the web version at mail.google.com on a computer. If the email shows there but not in the app, the problem is the app: update it, or in Android's Settings > Apps > Gmail > Storage clear the cache.
- Using Outlook or another app with Gmail? Check the web version first - if the email is there, the other app isn't syncing.
Step 7: Check for an Outage or a Sender Problem
- Google's Workspace Status Dashboard shows whether Gmail has a known problem.
- If just one sender can't reach you, their mail may be rejected before it reaches Gmail. Ask them to check for a bounce message (a "delivery status notification") - it names the reason.
- Emails from websites (sign-up codes, receipts) sometimes take a few minutes. Wait, then check Spam before requesting another code.
Stay Safe While Searching
If you find unexpected "you missed an email" or "your mailbox is full" messages with links, be careful - these are common phishing tricks. See how to spot a phishing email before you click. And protect the account itself with two-factor authentication - a forwarding rule you didn't create can be a sign someone else got in.
Still Missing?
If a filter, forwarding rule or blocked address appears that you never set up, change your Google password right away and review Security in your Google Account. For anything else, the GetQuickTechSupport team can check your settings with you.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Why am I not receiving emails in Gmail?
Most often the email went to Spam or another tab, a filter moved or deleted it, the sender is blocked, the emails are forwarded elsewhere, or your Google storage is full.
Does full Google storage stop Gmail from receiving emails?
Yes. Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos share one storage quota. When it's full, Google says you can't send or receive emails in Gmail until you free space or get more storage.
How do I search every Gmail folder at once?
Type in:anywhere followed by the sender's address or a word from the subject in the Gmail search box. It searches Spam and Trash too.
How do I stop a sender's emails going to Spam?
Open the email in Spam and select Report not spam. Adding the sender to your Google Contacts also helps.
