YouTube Videos Not Playing in Chrome: How to Fix It
A video that stays black, spins forever, stops every few seconds, or shows "An error occurred. Please try again later" is usually a problem with Chrome or the connection - rarely with YouTube itself. Start at the top: the first steps take seconds.
1. Reload and Restart
- Reload the page (press F5) or select Reload in the error message.
- Close other tabs, especially other videos and heavy web apps. YouTube Help suggests this when videos won't play.
- Close Chrome completely and open it again. On Windows, make sure it's really closed: in Task Manager, end any remaining Google Chrome tasks.
- Restart the computer if Chrome was open for days.
2. Test in an Incognito Window
Press Ctrl + Shift + N to open an Incognito window, go to youtube.com and play the same video.
- Works in Incognito: an extension or cached data is the problem. Go to steps 3 and 4.
- Fails in Incognito too: skip to step 5.
3. Check Your Extensions
Ad blockers, video downloaders, "YouTube enhancer" and privacy extensions often break the player after YouTube changes something.
- Type chrome://extensions in the address bar.
- Turn off all extensions.
- Reload the video. If it plays, turn extensions back on one at a time, reloading each time, to find the culprit.
- Update or remove that extension.
4. Clear YouTube's Cache and Cookies
Corrupted cached files can stop the player loading.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Delete.
- Choose a time range (start with Last 24 hours or Last 7 days; use All time if that doesn't help).
- Tick Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files.
- Select Delete data, then reload YouTube.
Deleting cookies signs you out of most sites. More detail: how to clear cache and cookies in Chrome, Edge and Firefox.
5. Update Chrome
Open Chrome menu (three dots) > Help > About Google Chrome. Chrome checks for updates and installs them; select Relaunch when asked. YouTube supports current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari and other major browsers, and old versions may not play videos.
6. Make Sure JavaScript Is Allowed
YouTube Help says videos won't run without JavaScript.
- Go to Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > JavaScript.
- Choose Sites can use JavaScript.
- Check that youtube.com isn't in the Not allowed list.
7. Turn Hardware Acceleration Off (or On)
Hardware acceleration lets Chrome use the graphics card for video. With a buggy graphics driver, it can cause a black picture, green screen, flickering or stutter.
- Go to Settings > System.
- Turn off Use graphics acceleration when available.
- Select Relaunch, then try the video.
If it was already off, try turning it on. Then update the display driver - see how to update drivers in Windows 11 the safe way.
8. Check the Connection
If videos start but buffer constantly, or only low quality works:
- Lower the quality: select the gear icon in the player > Quality and pick a lower value.
- Pause other heavy use - downloads, cloud backups, other streams.
- Switch networks to test: YouTube Help suggests changing between Wi-Fi and mobile data. If a phone hotspot works fine, the home connection is the problem.
- VPN or proxy: turn it off and try again.
- Pages won't load at all? See WiFi connected but no internet.
9. Sign In, and Check for an Outage
YouTube Help notes that some features may not work properly when you're not signed in. Sign in and try again. If YouTube fails for everyone - on your phone and in other browsers too - it may be a temporary service problem; wait a while and try again.
10. Reset Chrome Settings
If nothing else works:
- Go to Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their original defaults > Reset settings.
This turns off extensions and clears temporary data, and resets the start page, search engine and pinned tabs. Bookmarks, history and saved passwords are kept.
Still Not Fixed?
- Other video sites fail too? The problem is Chrome or the graphics driver, not YouTube. Try another browser such as Edge or Firefox to confirm.
- Chrome crashes or freezes on video pages? See Chrome keeps crashing or freezing.
- No sound, but the picture plays? Check the tab isn't muted (right-click the tab), the volume in the player, and your PC's sound output.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Why do YouTube videos not play in Chrome but work in other browsers?
The problem is in Chrome itself - most often an extension (especially ad blockers), a corrupted cache, an outdated version, or a hardware acceleration issue with the graphics driver. Test in an Incognito window first: if it works there, an extension or cached data is the cause.
Why is YouTube showing a black screen with sound?
A black picture with working sound usually points to hardware acceleration or the graphics driver. Turn off Use graphics acceleration when available in Chrome's System settings, relaunch Chrome, and update your display driver.
Does YouTube need JavaScript?
Yes. YouTube Help says videos won't play without JavaScript. In Chrome, check Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > JavaScript and make sure sites can use it, and that youtube.com isn't blocked.
Why does YouTube keep buffering?
Buffering usually means the connection is too slow or unstable for the chosen quality. Lower the quality in the video's settings (gear icon), pause other downloads and streams, or move closer to the Wi-Fi router.
