Copy and paste is so basic that when it breaks, everything feels broken. The good news: it's usually a stuck app, a hung Windows Explorer or a keyboard issue, and it's fixable in a few minutes. First find out where it fails, then use the matching fix.
Try these three quick tests:
What the results mean:
| Result | Likely cause | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| Right-click works, shortcuts don't | Keyboard or key settings | Step 3 |
| Fails in one app only | That app | Step 4 |
| Fails everywhere | Clipboard or Windows | Step 2 |
| Fails only into Remote Desktop or a virtual machine | Clipboard sharing | Step 5 |
The taskbar disappears for a moment and comes back. Try copying again. If that doesn't help, restart the PC (Start > Power > Restart, not shut down) - it releases the clipboard from any app that's holding it.
This only removes what you've copied; it doesn't touch your files. If the clipboard history (Win+V) is what's broken, see clipboard history not working in Windows.
If right-click works but Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V don't:
osk, press Enter, then click Ctrl and C on it. If it works there, your physical keyboard is at fault.Copy and paste between your PC and a remote PC only works when clipboard sharing is on.
Remote Desktop Connection:
If it worked and then stopped during a session, restart the remote clipboard helper: on the remote PC, open Task Manager, go to Details, end rdpclip.exe, then press Win+R, type rdpclip.exe and press Enter. More on Remote Desktop in how to use Remote Desktop in Windows 11.
Virtual machines (Hyper-V, VirtualBox, VMware) need the guest tools or integration services installed and clipboard sharing turned on in the VM's settings.
Clipboard managers, screen-capture tools, remote-support tools and some security software watch the clipboard and can lock it. Close them one at a time and test.
To find the culprit, Microsoft's clean boot starts Windows with only Microsoft services:
msconfig, press Enter. If it works, turn services back on in small groups until it breaks again. Remember to undo the clean boot afterwards (msconfig > General > Normal startup).
Create a new local user account (Settings > Accounts > Other users) and test there. If copy and paste works in the new account, the problem is in your user profile, and moving to a new profile is the cleanest fix. If you'd like help with that, the GetQuickTechSupport team can do it remotely.
Often an app is holding the clipboard, Windows Explorer has hung, or the Ctrl key isn't registering. Test right-click Copy and Paste in Notepad, restart Windows Explorer from Task Manager, and restart the PC.
The keyboard shortcut isn't reaching Windows - usually a stuck or faulty Ctrl key, Filter Keys or Sticky Keys, or keyboard software that remaps keys. Try the other Ctrl key and the On-Screen Keyboard to check.
Clipboard sharing must be enabled. In Remote Desktop Connection select Show Options > Local Resources and tick Clipboard. If it stops working mid-session, restarting the rdpclip.exe process on the remote PC often fixes it.
No. Clearing clipboard data only removes items you copied to the clipboard (and the clipboard history list). Your files are not affected.
