Windows Not Booting Stuck-Black Screen-Looping

If your Windows laptop or PC refuses to boot, freezes on the logo, or shows a black screen, it does not mean your laptop is dead.

Most boot problems are caused by:

  • Corrupted system files
  • Faulty updates
  • Damaged boot loader
  • Driver issues
  • Disk errors
  • Faulty hardware

This guide gives a complete, step-by-step approach to fixing every type of Windows boot failure.
This covers:

  • Black screen issues
  • Spinning dots stuck
  • Boot loop
  • Automatic repair loop
  • No boot device found
  • Blue screen (BSOD) before boot
Let us start.

1. Types of Windows Boot Problems

1.1 Stuck on Logo

Windows logo appears, but system won’t move ahead.

1.2 Black Screen After Logo

You can see nothing, but system is running.

1.3 Blue Screen Before Boot

System crashes before login.

1.4 Automatic Repair Loop

Message: “Preparing Automatic Repair” repeatedly.

1.5 No Bootable Device

System cannot detect your hard drive/SSD.

1.6 Restart Loop

Laptop keeps restarting without entering Windows.

2. Basic Checks First

2.1 Remove External Devices

Unplug:
  • USB drives
  • External HDD
  • Mouse/Keyboard
  • Printer
  • Webcam
  • HDMI cable
Sometimes external devices interrupt booting.

2.2 Hard Reboot

Press and hold Power button for 10-15 seconds.
Restart the laptop.

2.3 Check for Display Issues

Your system may be ON, but display is black.
Try:
  • Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B (Resets graphics driver)
  • Shine a flashlight on screen → If dim display → Backlight fault
  • Connect HDMI to a TV/monitor
If external display works → screen problem.

3. Boot Into Recovery Mode

If Windows fails to boot three times, it automatically enters Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).
If not, trigger manually:
  1. Switch ON
  2. When logo appears → force shutdown
  3. Repeat 3 times
  4. WinRE menu appears
Now you can use:
  • Safe Mode
  • Startup Repair
  • Command Prompt
  • System Restore

4. Try Startup Repair

WinRE → Troubleshoot → Advanced Options → Startup Repair
Windows will:
  • Fix boot files
  • Repair corrupted system components
  • Reset boot configuration
If successful → Windows will restart normally.

5. Boot into Safe Mode

Safe Mode loads only essential drivers.
Steps:
  1. WinRE → Troubleshoot
  2. Advanced Options
  3. Startup Settings
  4. Restart
  5. Press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking
If Safe Mode works:
  • A driver or software is causing the issue
  • Remove recently installed programs
  • Remove new drivers
  • Uninstall recent Windows updates

6. Uninstall Recent Windows Updates

Updates often break boot.
In Safe Mode or WinRE:
Troubleshoot → Advanced Options → Uninstall Updates
Choose:
  • Latest Quality Update
  • Latest Feature Update
System will roll back.

7. System Restore (If Restore Points Exist)

WinRE → Troubleshoot → Advanced → System Restore
If restore points exist:
  • Select a date before the issue started
  • Restore Windows to stable state
No files are lost.

8. Command Prompt Fixes (Highly Effective)

Open:
WinRE → Command Prompt

8.1 Fix File System

chkdsk C: /f /r

8.2 Repair Boot Loader

bootrec /fixmbr bootrec /fixboot bootrec /scanos bootrec /rebuildbcd

8.3 Check System Files

sfc /scannow

8.4 Repair Windows Image

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
These commands fix:
  • Boot record corruption
  • Driver issues
  • Broken Windows files

9. Disable Fast Startup

Sometimes fast startup locks Windows in a glitch.
In WinRE Command Prompt:

powercfg -h off

10. Reset BIOS Settings

Enter BIOS:
  • Press F2 / F10 / Del at startup
  • Select "Load Default Settings"
  • Save & Exit
Also check:
  • Boot priority → ensure your SSD/HDD is first
  • Disable Secure Boot (if OS not loading)
  • Enable UEFI mode

11. Hard Drive / SSD Failure

If disk is failing, Windows cannot boot.
Signs:
  • “No Boot Device”
  • Clicking HDD noise
  • Very slow boot
  • Failed Startup Repair
  • CHKDSK shows bad sectors
Fix:
  • Replace HDD/SSD
  • Reinstall Windows
If SSD/HDD not detected in BIOS → hardware failure.

12. Graphics Driver Causing Black Screen

Boot into Safe Mode:
  • Go to Device Manager
  • Uninstall Display Driver
  • Restart
If system boots → driver issue.
Install latest driver from:
  • Nvidia
  • AMD
  • Intel

13. Factory Reset (Keep Files Option)

If Windows system is corrupted heavily:
WinRE → Troubleshoot → Reset this PC
Choose:
  • Keep my files (recommended)
  • Remove everything (last option)
Windows will reinstall OS.

14. Complete Reinstallation of Windows

If nothing works, reinstall Windows using:
  • Bootable USB
  • Microsoft Media Creation Tool
Steps:
  1. Create bootable USB
  2. Boot from USB
  3. Select partition
  4. Install Windows fresh
This fixes deep corruption or damaged system files.

15. When It Is a Hardware Issue

If Windows still won’t boot:
Possible hardware faults:
  • SSD/HDD failure
  • RAM failure
  • Loose connectors
  • CPU overheating
  • Motherboard faults
  • BIOS corruption
Quick Checks:
  • Reseat RAM
  • Use single RAM stick
  • Try another SSD
  • Clean dust and check cooling
If still dead → service center required.
