Face sign-in worked yesterday, but today Windows just shows "Couldn't recognize you", keeps searching, or Settings says facial recognition isn't available. The good news: you can still sign in with your PIN, and face sign-in is usually fixed by retraining it or reinstalling the camera driver. Here's the order to try.
On the sign-in screen, select Sign-in options and choose your PIN or password. If the PIN doesn't work either, see Windows 11 PIN not working or not available first.
Windows Hello face sign-in needs an infrared (IR) camera. A regular webcam - even a good one - can't do it. Many business and premium laptops have one; many budget laptops don't.
Signs you have one: Settings offers Facial recognition (Windows Hello) as a setup option, or you've used face sign-in on this PC before. If you've never had the option, the PC likely has no IR camera - use a PIN or a fingerprint reader instead.
If you wear glasses, run it once with and once without them. This helps most when face sign-in works only sometimes.
If improving doesn't help, start fresh:
Windows needs a PIN before it lets you set up face sign-in.
"We couldn't find a camera compatible with Windows Hello Face" on a laptop that had it working usually means a driver problem.
Then install updates, including Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates - camera drivers often come this way, or from your laptop maker's support site. See how to update drivers in Windows 11 the safe way.
If the regular camera doesn't work in any app either, see camera not working on Windows 11.
If you use a separate Windows Hello webcam, connect it directly to the PC rather than through a hub, and check the maker's driver. Some PCs with Enhanced Sign-in Security turned on only allow the built-in camera for face sign-in - check your PC maker's documentation.
If facial recognition is greyed out with a note that your organization manages some settings, the policy comes from your IT department. Ask them - you can't change it yourself.
Install all Windows updates and restart. If the IR camera still doesn't appear in Device Manager at all after that, it may be a hardware fault - contact the laptop maker. Meanwhile, the PIN is just as secure for everyday sign-in.
Windows Hello face sign-in needs an infrared (IR) camera. A normal webcam can't be used. If your laptop has an IR camera, the message usually means its driver isn't installed or the camera is disabled.
Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Facial recognition (Windows Hello) and select Improve recognition. Do it with and without glasses if you wear them.
Yes. On the sign-in screen select Sign-in options and use your PIN or password.
Usually no Windows Hello compatible camera is detected, a PIN hasn't been set up yet, or a work or school policy turns it off.
