How to Check Your Windows 11 Version and Build Number
Many fixes, guides and support agents start with one question: which Windows do you have? Some settings only exist in newer versions, some features only in the Pro edition, and some bugs only affect certain builds. Here are three quick ways to check, and what the numbers mean.
Method 1: winver (the Fastest)
- Press Win + R to open the Run box.
- Type
winver and press Enter.
The About Windows box shows a line like "Version 24H2 (OS Build 26100.xxxx)". It also names the edition (Home, Pro and so on) further down.
Method 2: Settings > System > About
This page shows everything in one place and lets you copy it.
- Press Win + I to open Settings.
- Go to System > About (scroll to the bottom of the System page).
- Look under Windows specifications:
- Edition: Windows 11 Home, Pro, Enterprise or Education.
- Version: the feature update, for example 23H2, 24H2 or 25H2.
- Installed on: when that version was installed.
- OS build: the exact build, including the latest monthly update.
- Under Device specifications you'll also find the Device name, processor, installed RAM and System type (64-bit).
Select Copy next to either section to paste the details into an email or chat with support.
Method 3: Command Prompt or Terminal
Useful if Settings won't open or you're following remote instructions.
- Right-click Start and open Terminal (or open Command Prompt).
- Run:
systeminfo
Look at the OS Name (edition), OS Version (build) and System Type lines near the top. It takes a few seconds to collect the information.
What the Numbers Mean
- Windows 11 vs Windows 10: winver and Settings name the product. If you see Windows 10, instructions written for Windows 11 may use different menu paths.
- Edition: some features are only in Pro and higher, for example hosting a Remote Desktop connection, Group Policy Editor (
gpedit.msc) and full BitLocker management. Home users need different steps for those. - Version (such as 24H2): "H2" means the second half of that year's release. Microsoft supports each version for a limited time, so an old version eventually stops getting security updates.
- OS build: the number before the dot is tied to the version; the number after the dot goes up with each monthly update. Support articles often say "fixed in build xxxxx.yyyy or later". Compare it with yours.
How to Get the Latest Version
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Install the updates offered, including any feature update shown as Download and install, and restart.
- Check winver again to see the new version or build.
If updates fail or get stuck, see Windows Update stuck or failing.
Checking on a PC That Won't Start
If Windows won't boot, you can't run winver, but the PC's box, the sticker on the case (for older PCs), or your PC maker's support page for your serial number often shows which Windows it shipped with. The version installed now may be newer if updates were installed.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the fastest way to see my Windows version?
Press Win + R, type winver and press Enter. The About Windows box shows the version (for example 24H2) and the OS build number.
How do I know if I have Windows 11 Home or Pro?
Open Settings > System > About and look at Edition under Windows specifications.
What's the difference between version and build?
The version (such as 23H2, 24H2 or 25H2) is the yearly feature release. The OS build number (such as 26100.xxxx) also changes with each monthly update, so it tells you exactly how up to date the PC is.
How do I check if Windows is 64-bit?
Settings > System > About shows System type under Device specifications. Windows 11 is only available as 64-bit.
