You click Windows Security and nothing happens, it opens to a blank window, or it says Virus & threat protection is off and won't turn back on. Windows Security is where Microsoft Defender Antivirus, the firewall and other protections are managed, so it's worth fixing quickly. This guide covers the common causes on Windows 11, starting with the harmless ones.
This is the most common reason, and it isn't a fault.
When you install another antivirus (Norton, McAfee, Bitdefender, Avast and others), Windows automatically turns off Microsoft Defender's real-time protection so the two don't conflict. Windows Security then shows the other product as the active provider.
To check, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection. If another product is listed as active, and it is up to date, you're protected.
If you removed that antivirus or its subscription ran out and Defender didn't come back:
Many laptops come with a trial antivirus pre-installed. When the trial expires it can stay "active" but stop updating. Uninstalling it brings Defender back.
If the switch is greyed out or turns itself off again, go to the next steps.
A broken app can fail to open or show a blank page.
If the app settings page doesn't open, reset it from PowerShell:
Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.SecHealthUI -AllUsers | Reset-AppxPackage
Windows Security depends on Windows components. Corrupted system files can break it. In an administrator Terminal, run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow
Details and what the results mean: how to run SFC and DISM to repair Windows 11.
services.msc and press Enter.Windows protects these services, so you may not be able to change them, which is normal. If they're stopped and can't start, the next step is especially important.
On a work or school PC, your IT department controls these settings; ask them.
On a personal PC, this message can come from policies left behind by old security software or "tweaking" tools, or from malware that turned protection off on purpose. Don't try to delete policies you don't understand. Instead:
If you suspect an infection, see how to remove malware from Windows.
If Windows Security stopped working after a specific update or program install, System Restore can return Windows to an earlier restore point while keeping your personal files. See how to use System Restore in Windows 11.
The last resort is Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC with Keep my files, which reinstalls Windows and removes your apps. Back up first. Until protection works again, avoid opening unknown downloads and email attachments.
Most often another antivirus program is installed, and Windows turns Microsoft Defender's real-time protection off so the two don't conflict. That is normal as long as the other antivirus is active and up to date.
Open Start, type Windows Security, right-click it and choose App settings, then select Reset. You can also run Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.SecHealthUI -AllUsers | Reset-AppxPackage in PowerShell as administrator.
On a work or school PC it means your organization controls the setting. On a home PC it can come from leftover policies of old security software, or from malware, so run an offline scan.
Only if another reputable, up-to-date antivirus is running. Never leave Windows with no antivirus protection at all.
