Excel Not Responding How to Fix It
Excel's title bar says (Not Responding), the window turns pale, and clicks do nothing - sometimes on every file, sometimes on one big workbook. Before you force it closed, give it a minute: Excel may just be busy. If it keeps happening, these steps (based on Microsoft's own troubleshooting order) find the cause.
Before You Start: Protect Your Work
- Wait 2-5 minutes before closing a frozen Excel. Large calculations, saving to a slow network drive or a cloud sync can hold it up.
- Look at the status bar at the bottom: if it says Calculating or shows progress, Excel is still working.
- If you do have to close it, reopen Excel and check the Document Recovery pane on the left for AutoRecover versions. Turning on AutoSave (for files in OneDrive or SharePoint) prevents most losses. The same recovery ideas apply to Word - see how to recover an unsaved Word document.
Step 1: Start Excel in Safe Mode
Safe mode starts Excel without add-ins and customizations.
- Close Excel completely (check Task Manager for leftover Excel processes).
- Press Windows + R, type
excel /safe and press Enter. - Open the problem file and work as normal.
If Excel is fine in safe mode, an add-in or startup file is the cause - go to Step 2. If it still freezes, skip to Step 4.
Step 2: Turn Off Add-ins
- Start Excel normally and open File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom, next to Manage, choose COM Add-ins and select Go.
- Untick all add-ins and select OK, then restart Excel.
- If the problem is gone, turn add-ins back on one at a time, restarting each time, until you find the one that causes it. Update or remove that add-in.
Repeat with Excel Add-ins in the same Manage list.
Step 3: Check Startup Files
Files in Excel's startup folders open every time Excel starts. Microsoft suggests moving them out to test:
- File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Trusted Locations shows the XLStart folder path.
- File > Options > Advanced > General shows the At startup, open all files in folder (if set).
Move any files out of these folders (don't delete them), restart Excel and test.
Step 4: Install Updates
Install Office and Windows updates:
- In Excel: File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
- In Windows: Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
Step 5: Look at the Workbook Itself
If only one file freezes, Microsoft lists several things in a workbook that slow Excel down:
- Formulas that reference whole columns (for example
A:A) or huge ranges. - Array formulas that reference an uneven number of cells.
- Hidden or zero-height objects and large numbers of shapes (often copied in from websites).
- Too many cell styles and heavy conditional formatting.
- Invalid or hidden defined names and links to other files that no longer exist.
Useful quick checks:
- Formulas > Calculation Options > Manual stops Excel recalculating on every edit (press F9 to calculate). Set it back to Automatic when done.
- Home > Conditional Formatting > Manage Rules (show rules for This Worksheet) to find duplicated rules.
- Formulas > Name Manager to delete names with
#REF! errors. - Save a copy as a new file and test it - files created by other programs can behave oddly until resaved.
Step 6: Repair Office
- Close all Office apps.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Microsoft 365 (or Microsoft Office), select the three dots > Modify.
- Choose Quick Repair first. If the problem stays, run Online Repair (it needs an internet connection and takes longer).
Repair fixes Office's program files - your workbooks aren't changed.
Step 7: Check for Conflicting Software
- Antivirus: make sure it's up to date. Some security tools add an Excel integration that can slow it down - check whether your antivirus offers an Office add-in and test with it off.
- Other programs: a clean boot (only Microsoft services at startup) shows whether a background program conflicts. Keep startup lean - see how to stop apps opening at startup in Windows 11.
Whole PC Slow, Not Just Excel?
If every program hangs, the problem isn't Excel. See computer freezing randomly on Windows 11 and check Task Manager for 100 percent disk usage.
Still Not Fixed?
If Excel freezes even in safe mode with a brand-new blank workbook after a repair and updates, the Office installation or user profile may need a closer look. The GetQuickTechSupport team can help remotely.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How do I open Excel in safe mode?
Press Windows + R, type excel /safe and press Enter. Excel starts without add-ins and customizations, so you can see whether one of them causes the problem.
How do I save my work when Excel is not responding?
Wait a few minutes first - Excel may be busy calculating. If it stays frozen, closing it may lose unsaved changes; when you reopen Excel, check the Document Recovery pane for AutoRecover copies.
Why does Excel freeze with only one file?
The file itself is usually the cause: formulas that reference whole columns, very large ranges, lots of conditional formatting, many shapes or hidden objects, or links to other files.
Will repairing Office delete my files?
No. Quick Repair and Online Repair fix the Office program files. Your workbooks are not touched.
